  31. Thank you for previewing WindowMagic Shareware, The productivity enhancement 
  32. tool for Windows. You are joining a world wide group of satisfied customers who
  33. use WindowMagic every day to enhance their Windows environment.

  35. The first Windows program you and your colleagues ever used was the Program 
  36. Manager. You are probably very comfortable and knowledgeable about the Program 
  37. Manager, however as you may have noticed there are certain inconsistencies, and
  38. missing features in the Program Managers design.
  39.  
  40. There used to be one solution to this problem, purchase an expensive new type of 
  41. "Program Manager" from a third party vendor.  Unfortunately besides being costly
  42. it requires you to learn an entirely new way of doing things. WindowMagic 
  43. finally provides you with a low cost, easy to use solution to this dilemma.

  45. WindowMagic extends and enhances the capabilities of the Program Manager instead
  46. of trying to replace it.  WindowMagic seemlessly integrates itself with the 
  47. Program Manager, fixes a major inconsistency, enhances a number of features, and
  48. teaches an old dog a few new tricks. Although the Program Manager is greatly
  49. enhanced by the addition of WindowMagic, you are not required to relearn any of
  50. the skills you previously acquired. Everything still works like it used to, you
  51. just have a few more features at your disposal.

  90. listed below. To  use WindowMagic on your Windows 3.1 compatible desktop, 
  91. portable or notebook computer, you need.

  94.     *  256k of free hard disk space for the WindowMagic Program
  95.     *  3.5 MB of free hard disk space for Icons.

  123. Quick Start
  124.  
  125. This Chapter provides a brief introduction to WindowMagic.  Please read this
  126. chapter to get started immediately.

  128. To access WindowMagic:
  129.  
  130. 1. Start Windows.
  131.  
  132. 2. If you have not already done so please follow the instructions in Install.txt 
  133.    Once started a 'WindowMagic' menu option will appear between the 'File' and 
  134.    'Option' items on the program managers menu bar. If you followed the 
  135.    instructions WindowMagic should have been added to your ' Startup' group and 
  136.    therefore will start every time Windows is loaded, no user interaction is 
  137.    required. If WindowMagic does not start, or if you disabled WindowMagic, 
  138.    simply open the 'Startup' group and double click on the WindowMagic Icon.

  142. WindowMagic Menu Overview
  143.  
  144. 1.    Select the 'WindowMagic' menu item from the Program Manager menu bar.
  145.     or simply press [Alt M] and the WindowMagic sub menu will open.
  146.

  148. 2.      Notice that the WindowMagic sub menu has 7 selections all of which 
  149.     can be accessed with your pointing device. Of the 7 selections 6 may be
  150.      accessed with the hot keys designated next to each selection. 
  151.     ( a hot key may be executed by first holding down the 'Alt' key and then 
  152.     the key designated to the right of it.)
  153.  
  154.     Example: Holding down the  'Alt'  key, while simultaneously pressing 
  155.     the 'V' key would automatically launch the Icon Palette Manager.

  158.     Here is a brief  explanation of each feature and its function,

  172. Using WindowMagic
  173.  
  174. Launching a ToolGroup
  175.  
  176. 1.    Select the "WindowMagic" menu item from the Program Manager menu.
  177. 2.    Select the "Launch ToolGroup" menu item from the WindowMagic sub menu, 
  178.     and a drop down list that includes all of your current program manager
  179.      groups will appear.
  180.  
  181.  
  182. 3.    Select the group that you would like create a ToolGroup for. If the 
  183.     ToolGroup was created previously then it will be displayed in its last 
  184.     position and size. If the ToolGroup is being created for the first time 
  185.     then the ToolGroup options dialog box will appear. 
  186.  
  187. 4.     Notice that there are several options available when creating a 
  188.     ToolGroup. Each option is selectable by the user when creating the 
  189.     ToolGroup and may be modified by the user after the ToolGroup  is 
  190.     created. A mark in the box to the left of the option designates it is 
  191.     selected. If there is not a mark in the box to the left of the option 
  192.     it is not selected. A brief explanation of each option is listed.
  193.  
  194.         OPTIONS                FUNCTION
  195.  
  196. 1. Display When Windows Starts        If this option is selected the ToolGroup
  197.                      will open when Windows starts. It will
  198.                      remember  it's last displayed location
  199.                      and size.
  200.                                                                                                           
  201. 2. Always on top            If this option is selected the ToolGroup
  202.                      will always be displayed on top of other
  203.                      windows. This is useful if you have a
  204.                      ToolGroup of favorite functions that you
  205.                      want available at all times.
  206.  
  207. 3. Display Format Options        These options are used to designate
  208.                      how your ToolGroup is displayed.  Each
  209.                      ToolGroup maintains it's own custom
  210.                      display options.
  211.  
  212. (If you should decide to cancel this operation use your mouse to select Cancel)
  213.  
  214.  
  215. A. Horizontal Rows            This option displays the ToolGroup as a
  216.                     set of horizontal rows that contain push
  217.                     buttons.  By selecting the number of
  218.                     rows you can determine the size and
  219.                      shape of the ToolGroup.
  220.  
  221. B. Vertical Rows                  This option displays the ToolGroup as a
  222.                      set  of  vertical rows that contain push
  223.                      buttons. By selecting the number of 
  224.                     rows you can determine the size and
  225.                      shape of the ToolGroup.  The valid
  226.                      number of rows for a ToolGroup is from
  227.                      1 to 5.
  228.  
  229. C. List                              This option displays the ToolGroup as a
  230.                     vertical list of push buttons that are                                 
  231.                     accompanied by the name of the program. 
  232.                     The rows entry field is    disabled for 
  233.                     this selection.
  234.  
  235. 4. Once you have set the options for the ToolGroup use your mouse or pointing 
  236.    device to select OK or press return. and the ToolGroup will appear.
  237.  
  238. (If you should decide to cancel this operation use your mouse to select Cancel)

  242. 5. You will now have created a ToolGroup. Notice that the ToolGroup contains 
  243. each program that was in the selected group. To execute a program from the 
  244. ToolGroup, simply position your cursor over the associated Icon and press the 
  245. left mouse key and the program will launch. You may change the position of the 
  246. ToolGroup on your screen by positioning your cursor on the Title bar and 
  247. pressing the left mouse button. While continuing to press the left mouse 
  248. button move your ToolGroup to the desired location and then release the left 
  249. mouse button.

  252. QUICK HINTS:
  253.     If your really anxious to see the options available for the ToolGroups 
  254.     here are a few Quick hints to get you started;
  255.  
  256. A.  Select the System menu box in the upper left-hand corner of the ToolGroup 
  257.     and a list of options will be displayed. 
  258.  
  259. B.  By double clicking on the Title bar of the ToolGroup with the left mouse 
  260.     button you will change the way the ToolGroup is displayed. Example; If your 
  261.     ToolGroup currently displayed Horizontally then double click on the Title 
  262.     bar and it will now display vertically, Double click on the Title Bar again 
  263.     and the ToolGroup will display Vertically with a list, Double click again 
  264.     and your ToolGroup will once again be displayed horizontally.

  266. C.  By positioning your cursor on the Title bar of the ToolGroup and holding 
  267.     down the right mouse button you will activate the QuickAccess feature.

  269. View Icon Palette
  270.  
  271. 1.     Select the [WindowMagic] menu item from the Program Manager menu.
  272. 2.    Select the [View Icon Palette] menu item from the [WindowMagic] menu, or
  273.      press "Alt+V" to go directly to the 'View Icon Palette' dialog.
  274. 3.    After selecting the " View Icon Palette" entry the palette selection 
  275.     dialog will appear.
  276. 4.    Select a WMP palette, exe or dll file from the displayed list of files.
  277.  
  278. Should you decide that you would like to cancel the operation, simply press
  279. the 'Cancel' button.  Help is also available for this dialog by pressing the 
  280. help button.

  283. Customizing a Group or Application Icon
  284.  
  285. 1.  After selecting a palette you wish to view, a window will be created that 
  286. displays all of the icons stored in that file.  This window is referred to as 
  287. an icon palette.
  288.  
  289. 2.  To assign an icon to a program manager Group or Application icon first 
  290. position your cursor over the icon in the palette you wish to select 
  291. (the cursor changes to a hand).
  292.  
  293. 3.  Next click and hold the left mouse button (the cursor changes to a black
  294. and white representation of the selected icon),  drag the mouse cursor 
  295. (while continuing to hold down the left mouse button) into position over the 
  296. top of the Group or Application icon you wish to customize and release the 
  297. mouse button.  The Group or Application icon will immediately be replaced by
  298. the new icon you have chosen.

  302. NOTE:    
  303.    As you move outside of the Palette the cursor changes to a circle with a 
  304.    slash through it, this signifies that it is an illegal 'Drop Zone'.  If 
  305.    you release the mouse button while the cursor is over an illegal zone no
  306.    action will take place.
  307.  
  308. NOTE:   
  309.    You may change the position of the Palette on your screen by positioning 
  310.    your cursor on the Title bar and pressing the left mouse button. While 
  311.    pressing the left mouse button move your Palette to the desired location
  312.    and then release the left mouse button.

  315. Create Icon Palette
  316.  
  317. 1.     Select the 'WindowMagic' menu item from the Program Manager menu.
  318. 2.    Select the 'Create Icon Palette' selection from the WindowMagic menu, or
  319.      press 'Alt+C' to go directly to the 'Create Icon Palette' dialog.
  320. 3.    After selecting the " Create Icon Palette" menu entry,  the palette 
  321.     creation dialog will appear. 
  322. 4.    Next type in a unique name for the palette, the name may contain up to 
  323.     eight characters, but must not contain a file extension. 
  324.         
  325. NOTE: 
  326.   If you type in a Palette that already exist then WindowMagic will prompt you 
  327.   with a "Palette Overwrite Warning" and will then ask if you want proceed?  If 
  328.   you answer no, the system will request that you enter a new name.  If you 
  329.   answer yes, the system will open the new palette and destroy the contents of
  330.   the old palette.

  332. 6.    Now your new Palette will be displayed. You will notice that when your 
  333.     new palette is opened it is empty. By selecting the System menu box in 
  334.     the upper left hand corner of the "Palette" a menu will appear that will
  335.      allow you to: Move, Minimize, Import, Delete, Access Help, or Close 
  336.     the Palette.

  338. NOTE:     
  339.   To Close the Palette Manager, simply click on  box in the upper left hand 
  340.   corner of the palette and select "Close" or press "Alt+F4"

  343. WindowMagic Options
  344.  
  345. 1.     Select the 'WindowMagic' menu item from the Program Manager menu.
  346.  
  347. 2.    Select the Options' selection from the WindowMagic menu.
  348.     You will notice that there are three (3) selections available under 
  349.     the options menu. All of these selections allow the user to turn 
  350.     On/Off specific parts of WindowMagic and to bring up the QuickAccess
  351.      customization dialog
  352.  
  353. 3.      To select one of the options position your cursor over the selection 
  354.     while holding down the left hand mouse button and then release the left 
  355.     hand mouse button. 
  356.  
  357. A.    QuickAccess            'Alt+Q'    Brings up the QuickAccess
  358.                         customization dialog
  359.  
  360. B.    Group Icon Customizer        'Alt+G'    Group Icon Customizer On/Off
  361.  
  362. C.    Windows Exit Enhancement    'Alt+E'    Windows Exit ehancement On/Off

  364.     You may have noticed that the entries have a green check mark next to 
  365.     them. This signifies that the feature is currently enabled, but has the
  366.      ability to be disabled at the your discretion.  If the feature was 
  367.     disabled the check mark would be replaced with a red circle with a 
  368.     diagonal slash mark.  This flexibility lets you pick and choose which 
  369.     enhancements to use.  This is allows you to use a layered approach to 
  370.     enhancing your Windows environment.

  376. QuickAccess
  377.  
  378. The "Quick Access" function brings up the QuickAccess customization dialog. This
  379. is where you can customize the "Quick Access" and 'FastLaunch' functions or 
  380. disable them. This selection must be activated in order for you to use 
  381. "Quick Access"  To access this with the hot key use the "Alt+Q" key sequence.
  382.  
  383. 1.     Select the 'WindowMagic' menu item from the Program Manager menu.
  384. 2.    Select the Options' selection from the WindowMagic menu.
  385. 3.    Select the QuickAccess menu item or use the hot key 'Alt+Q'
  386. 4.    You will then see a dialog box
  387. 5.    There are three (3) different sections to this dialog box.  Use, Sort By, 
  388.     and QuickAccess Activation Keys.

  390. To Select or De-Select any option use your mouse or pointing device to position 
  391. your cursor on top of the selection area and click your left mouse button once. 
  392. Doing this should cause the selection area to become blank ( option disabled) or
  393. filled in ( option enabled)

  397.         QuickAccess    By clicking on the box to the left of the 
  398.                 QuickAccess option a check mark appears 
  399.                 inside the box designating the QuickAccess 
  400.                 function to be enabled To Disable QuickAccess 
  401.                 simply click on the box to the left of the
  402.                 QuickAccess option and when the box is empty 
  403.                 the QuickAccess function is disabled FastLaunch
  404.                 By clicking on the box to the left of the 
  405.                 FastLaunc option a check mark appears inside 
  406.                 the box designating the FastLaunch function to 
  407.                 be enabled. To Disable FastLaunch simply click 
  408.                 on the box to the left of the FastLaunch option 
  409.                 and when the box is empty the FastLaunch 
  410.                 function is disabled

  412.   You must have QuickAccess enabled in order to use FastLaunch.

  422. Section 2    Sort By.            
  423.         
  424.         Last Used    This directly affects the way QuickAccess sorts 
  425.                 the applications. Selecting Last Used method 
  426.                 will cause the applications that were most 
  427.                 recently used to be displayed at the top of the 
  428.                 list

  431.     Alphabetical Order
  432.                 This Directly effects the way QuickAccess sorts 
  433.                 the applications. The QuickAccess list will be 
  434.                 displayed in alphabetical order.

  440. Section 3    QuickAccess Activation keys
  441.  
  442. This selection allows you to customize the way that you activate QuickAccess. 
  443. If you decide to use the left mouse button, instead of the default right mouse
  444. button you must also select a mode key. A mode key is a key that must be 
  445. pressed and held in combination with the mouse button.
  446.  
  447. Using QuickAccess
  448.  
  449. QuickAccess gives you the power to launch an application from a minimized 
  450. group. This allows you to minimize all of your groups and better organize your
  451. work space. You simply click and hold the right mouse button while the cursor 
  452. is over a minimized group icon to activate the QuickAccess menu.
  453.  
  454. A menu of all applications contained within the group is displayed in 
  455. alphabetical order (sorting by usage is also supported)  Highlighting an 
  456. application and then releasing the mouse key launches the application.  
  457. QuickAccess supports Program Managers file association and minimize on 
  458. use features.  
  459.  
  460. Another feature of the QuickAccess system is FastLaunch.  FastLaunch lets 
  461. you select your favorite or most commonly used application from each group 
  462. that is always available by simply double clicking on the minimized group. 
  463. ( notice the lighting bolt for the first menu entry, this designates your 
  464. FastLaunch choice for the selected group)  This eliminates the need to open 
  465. the group, or to use the QuickAccess menu for your most commonly used 
  466. applications.

  468. After using QuickAccess and FastLaunch most people never go back to the 
  469. "Microsoft Shuffle" way of doing things.

  483. Group Icon Customizer
  484.  
  485. The "Group Icon Customizer" menu selection toggles on and off the ability 
  486. to display a custom icon for a Program Manager group. 
  487.  
  488. This selection must be enabled in order for you to see the customizations 
  489. you have made to the Program Managers group icons.  If you would like to 
  490. disable this function at any time, simply access the WindowMagic menu and 
  491. select the Options menu and then the "Group Icon Customizer" 
  492. menu entry.

  494. This option only affects whether or not the customized groups are displayed, 
  495. so don't worry about losing any changes you may have made. WindowMagic will 
  496. remember what Icons were attached to your Program Manager groups, Simply 
  497. re-enable the Customization option and the Icons that were previously 
  498. selected for your Groups will reappear! To select this function with a 
  499. hot key keys use the "Alt+G" key sequence.

  502. Windows Exit Enhancement
  503.  
  504. The "Windows Exit Enhancement" menu item toggles On and Off the ability 
  505. to use the "Windows Exit Enhancement" feature.  If you would like to 
  506. disable this function and use the standard Windows exit dialog, simply 
  507. access the WindowMagic menu and select the Options menu then select the 
  508. "Windows Exit Enhancement" menu entry.

  510. To re-enable the "Windows Exit Enhancement" feature simply access the 
  511. WindowMagic menu and select the Options Menu then select the 
  512. "Windows Exit Enhancement" menu entry and the ability to utilize the 
  513. function will be re-enabled.  To toggle this feature with the hot key 
  514. use the "Alt+E" key sequence.

  521. Using Enhanced Exit
  522.  
  523. Being a Windows user you know that occasionally you want to exit and 
  524. then immediately restart Windows, or possibly re-boot your machine. 
  525. You might want to do this when you receive a program error, or maybe 
  526. you just want to start fresh. WindowMagic makes this simple and easy 
  527. by providing an enhanced exit dialog that replaces the 
  528. Program Managers.  
  529.  
  530. Additionally all exit features are accessible without bringing up the 
  531. dialog by using the ALT-X, ALT-R, or ALT-B hot key sequences 
  532. respectively.  This allows for a very fast means of exiting Windows 
  533. without using the Program Managers exit dialog.

  536.  
  537. The "Help" menu entry displays the help topic available for the 
  538. WindowMagic program If you would like to use help for WindowMagic, 
  539. simply access the WindowMagic menu and select the "WindowMagic Help" 
  540. Menu item and the help dialog will appear.

  542. About WindowMagic
  543.  
  544. The "About WindowMagic" menu entry displays the:  Registered user, 
  545. Version Number, Serial Number. and WinWear's telephone number so you 
  546. can tell all your friends what a great product WindowMagic is, or 
  547. report a problem.  If you would like to view the "About WindowMagic" 
  548. screen, simply access the WindowMagic menu and select the 
  549. "About WindowMagic" menu item and the "About WindowMagic " 
  550. dialog will appear.

  552. Disable WindowMagic
  553.  
  554. The "Disable WindowMagic" menu entry disables WindowMagic until 
  555. you restart Windows or restart WindowMagic.  If you would like to 
  556. disable WindowMagic, then simply access the WindowMagic menu 
  557. and select the "Disable WindowMagic" menu entry, or use the "Alt+D" hot 
  558. key sequence.
